The Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) Chamber of Ghana has expressed deep concern over rising attacks on mobile money agents – which led to the death of three agents within a month.
The chamber extended condolences to families of the deceased and entire mobile money agents’ fraternity, stressing that such violence threatens both lives and the country’s financial ecosystem.
In a statement, the chamber urged government, the Interior and Finance Ministries, Inspector General of Police and Bank of Ghana to take urgent steps in protecting mobile money agents.
Law enforcement agencies were also called upon to intensify efforts to arrest and prosecute perpetrators of these crimes.
As part of its response, the chamber announced plans to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service and Bank of Ghana to implement security measures, including an agent registry and security of agents project.
The chamber also dispelled misconceptions that mobile money agents carry large sums of cash, warning that such false beliefs make them targets for criminals.
To enhance their safety, agents are advised to:
- Close their shops by 6:00pm to avoid nighttime attacks.
- Avoid carrying large sums of cash or working in isolated locations.
- Invest in CCTV cameras, panic alarms and security systems.
- Stay vigilant and report suspicious activities.
- Register their businesses with the nearest police station for better protection
The chamber reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure the safety of agents and urged government to prioritise their protection, noting that immediate action is needed to prevent further loss of lives.
