Wa — A 23-year-old Fulani herdsman is in police custody for allegedly robbing passengers on the Wa-Kumasi Highway.
The suspect, Yussif Seidu, was arrested at a Fulani settlement, near the crime scene, by personnel from the Upper West Regional Police Command, at Wa, on Sunday, but two accomplice were on the run, and being sought by the police.
The Public Relations Officer of the Regional Police Command, Inspector Gideon Ohene Boateng confirmed the story to the Ghanaian Times, at Wa.
He said that the suspect together with two others accosted and robbed occupants of a KIA Truck, which was heading to Kumasi with bags of maize from Tumu.
Insp Boateng said the robbers, who masked their faces with black caps and handkerchiefs, and armed with two loaded pistols and a pump gun allegedly signaled the vehicle to stop.
He said when the vehicle stopped, the robbers ordered the passengers out of the vehicle, and took their mobile phones, a bag containing personal items and GH?2,430.00, and bolted into the bush.
"When the driver and the other occupants of the vehicle drove to a nearby police barrier along the way, the driver reported the incident to the police, who escorted them to the scene of the crime in the same vehicle," Insp Boateng said.
He said when they got to the scene, the robbers again stopped the vehicle, and the police in their bid to arrest them, exchanged gunfire with the robbers, flee the scene, leaving behind a rusted foreign pistol with two rounds of ammunition.
Insp Boateng said a search at the crime scene led to the arrest of Yusif Seidu, who was identified by the driver, as someone at the Fulani settlement.
He said the suspect was assisting the police with investigation.
