Dozens of passengers traveling from Salaga to Tamale were left stranded on Thursday morning as commercial drivers refused to operate, protesting a directive to implement a 15% reduction in transport fares.
The drivers had earlier agreed to a 10% fare reduction, falling short of the 15% cut announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
However, on Wednesday, May 28, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for East Gonja, Yazid Kassim, and the Municipal Security Committee intervened, demanding that drivers comply fully with the GPRTU directive or face closure of their station.
In response, the drivers halted operations entirely, citing operational costs and insisting they cannot afford to reduce fares beyond the 10% already implemented.
The situation has caused significant inconvenience to commuters along the busy Salaga-Tamale route, with many left stranded at the lorry station awaiting transport.
Further developments are expected as local authorities and driver unions work to resolve the standoff.
