Tension is mounting within the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) over the prolonged delay in finalizing and implementing their Conditions of Service.
In a statement signed by the General Secretary, King James Azortibah, the Union expressed growing dissatisfaction among its members. According to the statement, the delay has denied TEWU members access to certain benefits already being enjoyed by other education sector staff.
“The delays in concluding the negotiations have prevented our members from receiving payments that have already been granted to staff whose Conditions of Service have been signed and implemented, excluding those under the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of TUC,” the statement read.
The Union noted disparities between teaching and non-teaching staff, citing that teachers, through negotiations by their respective unions, have seen their Professional Development Allowance doubled from GH?1,200 to GH?2,400. In contrast, non-teaching staff remain left out as TEWU’s Conditions of Service remain unsigned.
Further compounding the issue, TEWU highlighted that senior staff, senior members, and management personnel within senior public and technical universities have been denied utility and vehicle maintenance allowances— benefits they would otherwise have received if their Conditions of Service had been finalized.
“These delays have sparked serious agitation among our members,” Azortibah noted. “Leadership has exhausted its ability to pacify our members after months of patience.”
As a final warning, TEWU has issued an ultimatum to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, demanding that it be invited to the negotiation table by May 31, 2025 to finalize the Conditions of Service. Failure to do so, the Union says, will compel it to take further action.
“We are giving the Commission until May 31, 2025, to conclude negotiations. If no progress is made, we will be forced to advise ourselves accordingly,” the statement concluded.
