The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has issued a firm warning to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) involved in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, to desist.
Mr Tameklo made it clear that any party member who engages in such activities would face severe consequences under the Mahama-led administration.
Speaking on The KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey on April 19, Mr Tameklo, who is also the Director of Legal Affairs for the NDC, said, “Let the record reflect this, that if you’re an NDC person and you decide to go and do galamsey, you’re on your own. President Mahama would deal with you brutally. Don’t,” he cautioned.
According to him, any individual from the party who chooses to flout the law by engaging in galamsey will not only lose the protection of the party but will also be seen as a direct threat to the core values and mission of the NDC.
“Once you make up your mind that you are going to do this, remember that one, you are the enemy of President Mahama. Two, you are the enemy of his government. Three, you are the enemy of the NDC.”
Taking an even stronger tone, Tameklo described such individuals as “environmental terrorists”, adding that their actions not only harm the ecosystem but undermine the integrity of the party and its governance philosophy.
“At this point, you are an environmental terrorist. In fact, most importantly—you understand—you are an environmental terrorist.”
He was emphatic that any hopes of protection or intervention from top-ranking party officials, should someone be caught in the act, would be completely misplaced.
“Don’t for a minute assume that something will happen and then they’ll call ‘order from above’. That order, if you are the one going to respond to that order, one—you won’t get Dr. Omane Boamah getting involved. No, you won’t get him,” he stressed.
Mr Tameklo reiterated the importance of discipline and adherence to lawful livelihoods among NDC members, encouraging them to explore legitimate opportunities rather than tarnish the party’s image with illegal activity.
“Please, please, please, please, please—in the name of God—there are a lot of legitimate businesses that as an NDC person you can do in this government. Okay? Don’t you become a centipede for President Mahama.”
He also indicated that such firm declarations are not just rhetoric but would be enforced with accountability in mind.
