West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus has urged African players to portray their skills when handed the opportunity.
Kudus‘ candid assessment comes after he was quizzed by UK-based Ghanaian rapper Gunva B in an honest conversation about heritage, culture, and identity.
In response to descriptions by commentators during games, Kudus spoke against limiting the description of African players to their physical attributes.
“Mostly, when African players are being described, it’s more about their physique, strength, and their speed,” Kudus told Premier League productions.
“In my eyes, I believe that we have skilful players. I would urge more African players to be who they are and enjoy their qualities and stuff.”
The 24-year-old cited Manchester City legend Yaya Toure as an example of a player whose talent was often undermined.
“Yaya Toure was crazy, untouchable.
He had more than pace and power.”
“You need a lot of flair to be beating players. This league, everyone, is strong. Everyone is strong and fast so you need something special to do that.”
Kudus has lit up the Premier League since joining West Ham from Ajax in 2023.
The Ghanaian’s dribbling ability and goalscoring have endeared him to West Ham fans.
West Ham lost 2-1 to Liverpool on Saturday- a result which continues their struggles this season.
The Hammers sit oustide the relegation zone, with six games to end the season.
