In a recent gathering focused on enhancing the nutritional standards of meals provided to school children, the North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, urged caterers involved in the school feeding programme to prioritize the quality of their food.
He emphasized that when children eat good food, they will share their experiences with their parents, leading to greater satisfaction and positive discussions about the government’s efforts in improving school meals.
Addressing the dedicated women caterers, the Minister stated, “It is critical for us to ensure that the meals provided to our school children are of the highest quality.” He pointed out that the health and well-being of students are directly linked to the quality of food they consume daily, as many children depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition.
Sumaya Ligbi Salifu, the region’s school feeding coordinator, reinforced the Minister’s message by urging caterers to approach their work with a sense of responsibility.
“Don’t think you’re cooking for just students,” she remarked. “Have it in mind that you’re cooking for your children. Avoid giving food poison to schools and work to leave a legacy.”
She further warned that failure to comply with the established standards would result in withdrawal from the programme, emphasizing that caterers should not prepare food that they wouldn’t consider suitable for their own pets. “Their lives matter most,” she stressed, highlighting the critical importance of safety and quality in food preparation.
Both officials engaged with the caterers, encouraging them to take pride in their role in shaping the health of future generations. The Minister’s call to action underscored the collective responsibility of the community in ensuring that the school feeding program meets the highest standards, ultimately benefiting the children and the region as a whole.
As the session concluded, the coordinator for school feeding in the North East Region, Sumaya Ligbi Salifu, reiterated the importance of collaboration between the government and the caterers, emphasizing that their joint efforts are essential for the success of the school feeding programme.
By prioritizing quality and safety in food preparation, the caterers can help foster a positive environment where children thrive, and parents feel reassured about the meals their children receive at school.
