President Mahama has officially launched the ‘Feed Ghana’ Program to revamp the agricultural sector and ensure long-term food security and economic growth.
The launch of the initiative took place on Saturday, April 12 in the Bono East Region.
The initiative marks a pivotal step in transforming agriculture across the country, promising a prosperous future for farmers, local communities, and the nation at large.
Aligned with the government’s broader agenda of securing Ghana’s agricultural future, the program launch opens a new chapter in harnessing the region’s vast farming potential.
Delivering the keynote address, President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the critical role agriculture plays in Ghana’s socio-economic development.
He outlined the ambitious goals of the Feed Ghana initiative, including modernizing the sector, achieving food self-sufficiency, reducing the nation’s food import bill—currently estimated at over $2 billion annually—boosting exports, and creating sustainable jobs, especially for the youth.
“The current food import bill is reported to stand at an alarming $2 billion annually. Agro-industries operate far below capacity, and although inflation has dropped from a high of 54% in 2022, it still hovers around 22% today,” the President noted.
He continued, “The main driver of this inflation index is the food basket. In this case, my government is rolling out the Feed Ghana program under the broader theme of agriculture for economic development.”
“This is a comprehensive attempt to modernize agriculture, create jobs, reduce food inflation, and strengthen food security,” he added.
The President outlined key components of the Feed Ghana program, including the establishment of Farmers’ Service Centres across all districts. These centers will provide vital support such as training, technical assistance, and market information to farmers.
The choice of Bono East Region—recognized for its fertile land and high agricultural output—as the launch site underscores its strategic importance. The region is a major producer of staples like yam, maize, cassava, cocoyam, rice, plantains, and beans.
The Feed Ghana program represents a significant investment in the country’s agricultural sector. Its success will be vital in achieving food security, driving economic growth, and improving the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.
