Over 150 staff members from the Ministry of Local Government in Ghana have demanded the immediate release of their unpaid salaries, which have been withheld for the past 17 months.
These employees, who work across all 16 regions of Ghana, have expressed frustration over a persistent issue where their pay slips show that salaries have been processed, yet the funds have not been deposited into their bank accounts.
According to the affected workers, despite regular updates on their pay slips validating salary payments, no funds have been received in their personal accounts. This ongoing discrepancy has created significant financial hardship for many of these employees, with some struggling to meet basic living expenses and fulfill financial obligations.
The employees have formally escalated the issue by submitting a petition to key ministries and institutions, demanding urgent action. The petition, which was delivered on April 8, 2025, was directed to the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment.
In their petition, the staff members are calling on the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the delay and ensure the swift disbursement of their salaries. The workers are demanding clarity on why their pay slips indicate payment has been made, yet no actual funds have been transferred to their accounts. They are urging the government to take immediate corrective measures to resolve the issue and restore confidence in the payment systems within the local government sector.
The salary discrepancies have affected local government employees in all 16 regions of Ghana, highlighting the scale of the issue. With many employees facing mounting financial challenges, the demand for swift resolution has become a pressing concern for both the workers and their families.
In the petition, the workers have emphasized that the lack of payment for such an extended period has undermined their ability to perform their duties effectively and has strained their financial security. They are urging the ministries to prioritize this issue and implement measures to ensure that future payments are processed smoothly and on time.
As of today, there has been no formal response from the authorities, but the workers remain hopeful that their petition will prompt quick action to resolve the situation.
