President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo and other development agencies to demolish structures on waterways.
This directive came after the President inspected ongoing works on drainage systems and flood-prone areas within the Accra metropolis on April 2.
During his tour, Mahama visited several sites, including the Abofu Achimota Bridge, Mallam Junction, and the Odawna in Circle.
He emphasized the need to fast-track the Accra Academy main drain system to prevent flooding in areas like Kaneshie, Bubuashie, and its environs.
“We are in April, and the rains are about starting. May-June is the climax of the rains in Accra. This Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project was given from Last year. From What I have seen, this project is not going to begin before the rains open up. If that happens, we must expect that there will be severe flooding this season,” he cautioned.
The President also advised settlers and residents to take precautions and avoid littering, which can choke drains and cause flooding.
“I have to caution citizens of Accra that there is going to be severe flooding because of the delay in this project. But we have to do everything to alleviate destruction of property and loss of life as much as possible,” President Mahama promised.
He urged Madam Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloor to work with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives who will be appointed in due course to ensure that all buildings on water ways are cleared.
“Minister, you and your team work as quickly as possible before the rains open up,” he charged.
With the rainy season approaching, Mahama urged Dredge Master to speed up their operations.
This directive is part of Mahama’s efforts to address the issue of flooding in Accra, which has been a perennial problem in the city.
By demolishing structures on waterways, the government aims to prevent flooding and protect lives, homes, and properties.
