The Chamber for Local Governance is backing the decision of President John Mahama to get state agencies to demolish buildings in waterways.
President Mahama during the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers on March 31, warned that the issue will not be allowed to persist any longer.
Reacting to this, the President of the Chamber, Dr. Richard Fiadumor, said what is needed now is the political will to carry this warning out.

According to him, most of the perpetrators are politically exposed people who end up frustrating the process while blaming some of the assembly engineers for being complicit in their duties.
“Admittedly, this is not the first time we are hearing such a news, and we always hear it after the devastation has occurred. So, we are gladdened that the President is being proactive to warn ahead of time. I think not too long ago, he formed a disaster committee, so clearly, he wants to move ahead of time.
“But the fact remains that the political push has always not been there. If you go to the Ramsar sites and the areas where people have built in water ways, the assemblies mostly become helpless as most of the culprits are politically exposed people. So, we want to see. Very soon the MMDAs will be constituted, and we expect them to work. Some of the assemblies, the engineers are complicit in the discharge of their duties as well,” he lamented on April 1.
