Sagnarigu MP, Issah Attah has commended government’s decision to remove the 10% betting tax, E-levy and other taxes imposed by the previous NPP administration.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, March 16, Issah Attah explained that the decision comes at the right time when Ghanaians are plagued with severe economic hardships.
According to him, this will ease the burden of economic hardships Ghanaians have been subjected to by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.
He told Keminni Amanor on Hot Issues that the move by government is a “pole-to-pole measure” to improve the economic conditions of Ghanaians.
“If you look at the unemployment rate and the general economic hardship of our people, it is quite insensitive to burden them with further taxes…if you look at all these fiscal difficulties we have as a country and people are subjected to so much hardship, so this is a pole-to-pole measure that seeks to uplift the condition of our people,” he stated.
The lawmaker noted that abolishing the betting tax was in the right direction as the NPP had also promised same during the campaign prior to the 2024 election.
“I don’t see anything wrong with fulfilling your social contract you made with the Ghanaian people. Prior to the election, we had made it abundantly clear that in this case both parties, NPP and NDC agreed on this particular tax handle to be abolished,” he added.
The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has presented eight bills to Parliament in furtherance of the government’s pledge to abolish the electronic transfer levy (E-levy) and betting tax among others.
He presented the legal documents to the House on March 13.
The eight bills include Electronic Transfer Levy (Repeal) Bill, 2025, Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Revenue Administration (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Special Import Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Emissions Levy (Repeal) Bill, 2025, Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Growth and Sustainability Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The Finance Minister pleaded with members to consider the bills under a certificate of urgency.
