Residents in the Ashanti Region are demanding a security boost due to recent attacks on mobile money vendors.
The region has witnessed three mobile money vendor killings in the last few days.
Their demand for a security boost follows two similar cases in the Ashanti Region.
Last month, a 27-year-old MoMo vendor, Patricia Nimako, was shot dead at Krofrom, with her attackers escaping with GH¢10,000 and mobile phones. Another vendor was murdered at Amansie Asaman under similar circumstances.
Police have since launched an investigation into the murder of a 25-year-old mobile money vendor at Kwadaso in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The victim, identified only as Junior, a native of Ejisu Onwe, was reportedly attacked in his one-room apartment on Saturday (8 March).
Sources gathered by our news team indicated that he had returned home that night with a substantial amount of money when unknown assailants stormed his residence. He was later found in a pool of blood, with the attackers allegedly fleeing with an undisclosed sum.
His landlord, George Boateng, said neighbours became suspicious after repeated attempts to reach him failed and a foul smell began emanating from his room.
“He was found with his legs tied and his hands bound behind his back. His mouth was also taped shut. There were deep lacerations on his neck, as if he had been slaughtered like a goat.
After the attack, the assailants locked the door from the outside and fled,” Boateng narrated the horrifying scene to our news team.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9 FM in Kumasi with Sir John, the Assemblyman for Kwadaso, Hon. Ernest Kwabena Frimpong, demanded a security boost in the area.
He said crime scene investigators have since visited the location as part of their investigations. The body has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for preservation and autopsy.
The recent killings have left inhabitants in fear, calling for urgent security measures.
“We are currently in a state of fear, and we are calling on the Ashanti Regional Security Council to beef up security in Kwadaso,” the Assemblyman said.
