
Akoma 87.9FM, subsidiary of Media General Group in Kumasi, has officially unveiled activities to mark the 2025 Heritage month.
This flagship initiative aims to celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, promote domestic tourism, and strengthen the creative arts industry.
It is under the theme: “Sustaining our cultural heritage; bridging the gap between the old and younger generations.”
The launch, which was held on Tuesday, 4th March,2025, in the studios of Akoma 87.9FM, brought together traditional leaders, clergy, staff members and the general public.
Ghana Month, observed every March, is designed to highlight Ghana’s cultural wealth through festivals, traditional cuisine, arts, crafts and music.
The event, usually used to depict the cultural heritage of the country.
During the period, presenters and staff members put on traditional regalia that represent various tribes in the country to showcase their tradition. The event was also used to acknowledge certain cultures in the country.
People from various ethnic settings were invited during the launch to provide in-depth education on some of their cultural practices for the benefit of Akoma 87.9FM audience.
The Head of Akoma 87.9FM, Ransford Nana Osei Asare, outlined some of the programmes or activities for the period. He said the station will launch ‘Asanteman Speaks’ on 12th March,2025, to focus on the history of Asanteman and cultural practices.
Others include, Akoma FM Boafo Foundation on 20th March,2025, to provide financial support for the needy in society as well as food and photo exhibition on 25th March, 2025.
He said the initiative is to raise awareness of Ghana’s cultural identity.
He touched on the need for national unity in the country.
“Ghana Month is when all of us embrace culture and learn to cherish our traditions and customs,” he said.
The Amoamanhene, Nana Agyenim Boateng, who was the special guest of honor, commended Akoma 87.9FM for the initiative saying it will help the younger generation to understand our cultural heritage.
“I’m encouraging all the media houses in Ashanti Region to learn from Akoma FM to enable us portray our cultural heritage,” he urged.
He emphasised that the importance of the heritage month is to put Ghanaian culture and heritage on a higher pedestal through the promotion of locally made products and showcasing our rich cuisine, ethnic and traditional diversity.
He also commended Akoma FM for providing reliable, credible and quality radio service over the years.
Nana Boateng appealed to Ghanaians to “endeavour to preserve and pass on our rich cultural heritage to posterity because that is how to maintain our unique identity.”
“We should be united as a country to help move the country forward. United we stand, divided we fall. Let’s be our brother’s keeper and stand for each other,” he stressed.
