A Member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Communications team, Hamza Suhuyini Sayibu, has said the former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam is only engaging in politics with his response to government’s successful payment of 4th DDEP coupon.
In a Facebook post on February 17 after government has announced the payment of the Domestic Debt coupons, the former finance minister stated that the previous NPP government honoured 3 previous payments both in Payment-In-Cash (PIC) and Payment-In-Kind (PIK).
According to Dr. Amin Adam, the NPP government never defaulted in payment of DDEP coupons.
However, in response to the Dr. Amin Adam’s statement, Hamza Sayibu said the former Finance Minister’s post smacks of political talks.
He noted that the NPP government cannot claim to make second and third DDEP coupon payments when they did not publicly state amount left in the debt buffers.
“I was disappointed in the early morning politicking that he engaged in especially considering the fact that this government is trying to at least run a very transparent system because I read the post and I was struggling to appreciate beyond the politics what he intended to achieve.
“You simply don’t say you made the second and third payments and you made provision for the subsequent payment to be made without telling us how much was left in terms of your debt buffers,” he said on New Day, February 18, 2025.
The NDC Communications team member explained that government by the payment of the coupons has boosted investor confidence.
“What this government has done is not to simply honour its financial obligations but to also communicate to the good people of Ghana and to a large extent its international partners that we have a strategy in place not to default our payments,” he added.
