Bawku conflict: We’ll resolve it through traditional means – Defence Minister

The Minister of Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah has met with the Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga to review the current security situation relating to the dispute in Bawku.

Following the meeting, Dr Omane Boamah said that President John Dramani Mahama assured the people that they would continue to follow the comprehensive roadmap to resolve this conflict through traditional means.

In a short statement titled “An Important Meeting Update on Bawku”, he said  “Today, I had the privilege of meeting with Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga, and other Members of Parliament at the Ministry of Defence.

“We reviewed the current security situation relating to the dispute in Bawku. As President John Dramani Mahama has assured the people, we will continue to follow the comprehensive roadmap to resolve this conflict through traditional means.

“We must restore peace and stability to Bawku and other communities, and I am determined to support that cause.”

Bawku has been experiencing escalating security concerns surrounding the ongoing conflict.

It is recalled that in response to escalating security concerns in Bawku and its neighboring areas, the Chief Justice ordered the immediate closure of several courts across the Upper East Region.

This directive, issued on October 29, 2024, aimed to safeguard judges, court staff, lawyers, and members of the public who use these facilities.

According to a memorandum from the Judicial Secretary dated October 29 2014, “the closures affect key judicial facilities, including the High Court and Circuit Court in Bolgatanga, as well as District Courts in Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.”

The decision followed rising concerns voiced by legal practitioners and other stakeholders regarding the safety of judicial staff and court users amid the ongoing tensions in Bawku.
