Senior lawyer and former Council of State member, Sam Okudzeto, has defended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, amidst growing agitation within the Police Service.
He dismissed calls for the IGP’s removal, insisting that Dampare is a levelheaded and professional leader committed to doing the right thing.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on 3FM’s AGENDA, Mr. Okudzeto questioned the basis of criticisms against the IGP.
“I don’t even understand what they are driving at. I have watched this country since independence, and if there has been any person who is levelheaded and strict about doing the right thing, it is the current IGP, Dr. Dampare.”
His comments come in response to internal grievances within the Police Service, with some officers accusing Dr. Dampare of unfairly denying them promotions. Earlier this year, a Kumasi High Court dismissed a case filed by 40 officers who alleged that they had been wrongfully denied career advancements.
Additionally, some police personnel have accused the IGP of restricting regional and district commanders from engaging with the media, even on cases within their jurisdiction. These concerns have fueled dissatisfaction, leading some to call for his removal.
However, Mr. Okudzeto rejected these calls, arguing that governance and leadership should not be disrupted unnecessarily.
“I think that people just assume that when there is a change of government, there must also be a change of everything. We cannot run a country that way—it makes no sense,” he emphasized.
Despite the criticism, Dr. Dampare has received support from various quarters, with many commending his efforts to maintain discipline, professionalism, and integrity within the Ghana Police Service.
