The Western Regional House of Chiefs has nominated Nana Kobina Nketsia V Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional area as their President, tasked with leading the house for the next four years.
This development also brings to a close a five-year-long leadership crisis within the House, ushering in a new era of stability and cooperation.
During Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah’s visit to seek the blessing of the chiefs, they welcomed him to his new role.
This gesture is seen as a positive step towards fostering cooperation between the government and traditional leaders in addressing key issues related to lands and natural resources.
As Minister Buah settles into his new position, he has already outlined his vision, which includes restoring forest reserves and tackling the issue of illegal small-scale mining.
Addressing the gathering, Paramount Chief of Nsein Traditional Council, Awulae Agyefi Kwame, revealed that the House has unanimously decided to nominate Nana Kobbina Nketsia V as their president.
Additionally, the chiefs have resolved to appoint Nana Kwesi Agyemang of Lower Dixcove as Vice President to the House, marking a significant development in the leadership of the Western Regional House of Chiefs.
“Prior to our meeting today, we’ve had several gatherings to discuss ways to unite and find lasting solutions to our issues. We’ve reached conclusions on several ideas, one of which I’ll share with the house. Our subjects are concerned about the ongoing litigation among us chiefs, which has hindered our progress for years. Despite numerous visits from government officials, we’ve yet to find resolution. However, as the Bible says, ‘there is a time for everything,’ and I believe this is our moment.”
“This morning’s meeting with all paramount chiefs and Honorable Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah marked a turning point. His humility and good character inspired us to put aside our grievances and bitterness, prioritizing the region’s development instead. We’ve also decided to forgo elections for the House President and nominate Nana Kobbina Nketsia V Chief of Essikado Traditional Area to lead our affairs,” he announced.
Awulae Agyefi Kwame revealed that the chiefs who had obtained a court injunction at the Sekondi High Court have agreed to withdraw their cases, effective immediately.
The Western Regional House of Chiefs has finally broken a year’s representation drought at the National House of Chiefs, marking a significant milestone in the region’s leadership.
This development comes after Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II relocated to the Western North Region, leaving the Western Region without a representative at the national level and plunged into a leadership crisis.
In a significant move, three prominent chiefs have been selected to represent the region at the National House of Chiefs. They are: Awulae Angama Tuagyan Representing the Gwira Traditional Council, Awulae Atibrukusu III Representing Lower Axim and Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi traditional area.
This new representation is expected to foster development in the region, which has been hindered by protracted chieftaincy disputes.
Addressing the chiefs, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah stated, “Today is a significant day in my life, one that I won’t soon forget. As I sat here, I reflected on the events that have transpired. I firmly believe it’s Almighty God who has brought us together. After my swearing-in, I received numerous requests to visit other regions, but I chose to start here, in my hometown.”
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to God and the chiefs for accepting my request. Going forward, I’ll remember that I have the support of these esteemed chiefs, and I’ll strive to excel in my duties, ensuring I don’t disappoint them.”
Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the chiefs and dignitaries from the Minerals Commission and Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, citing his overwhelming satisfaction with the recent developments.
As he reflected on his tenure, Nelson revealed that the leadership crisis at the House of Chiefs had been a persistent challenge, but thankfully, Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah’s efforts had helped resolve the issue.
Nelson acknowledged the significance of this breakthrough, emphasizing its potential to drive development in the region.
He commended the chiefs for recognizing the importance of unity and collaboration in pursuing regional growth.
This newfound cooperation is expected to have a positive impact on the region, building on the progress made since the inauguration of the new Western Region House of Chiefs in 2020.
