Each member of the Black Satellites squad that won the 2009 U-20 FIFA World Cup is set to receive 60,000 Ghana cedis, the matured value of a 10,000 Ghana cedis investment made on their behalf by the government.
After their historic win, then-President John Evans Atta Mills initiated a 15-year investment plan, setting aside 10,000 Ghana cedis for each player. SAS Finance Group, the investment firm, has confirmed the maturity of the funds and notified the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to inform the players. Some players have already collected their cheques, while those who haven’t can claim theirs by presenting their Ghana Cards, according to a GFA communiqué.
The team made history by beating Brazil in a nail-biting penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes, despite being down to 10 men following Daniel Addo’s red card in the first half. Coach Sellas Tetteh’s side showed immense determination to claim the trophy, becoming the first African team to win the tournament.
Upon their return from Egypt, the squad was celebrated nationwide. President Mills rewarded them with brand-new cars and cash while opting to invest a portion of their rewards for their future. This decision has proven to be wise, especially since some players are now facing financial challenges, with injuries forcing them into early retirement. Only a handful have managed to continue playing football at the highest level.
Coach Sellas Tetteh, who was not included in the investment plan, is currently battling health issues. However, he has received significant support from former team captain Andre Ayew and the GFA.
The 2009 squad was truly special, winning both the African Youth Championship and the U-20 World Cup. Many of its players transitioned successfully into the Black Stars, with stars like Andre Ayew, Samuel Inkoom, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, Jonathan Mensah, and Dominic Adiyiah playing key roles as Ghana reached the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations final and the World Cup quarterfinals in South Africa.
