Collation challenges: Use legal avenues to redress your concerns – National Peace Council

The National Peace Council (NPC) has urged all contestants in the December 7 parliamentary election who have challenges with the outcome to seek redress in court.

The NPC said this will ensure amicable settlement of any dispute.

“The NPC calls on all political party representatives to avail themselves of every legal avenue available to redress their concerns to ensure the safety of all participants at this stage of the electoral process,” a press release dated December 13 stated.

The Council also called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to “convene an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with all political party representatives and other important stakeholders to discuss and agree an amicable resolution to the impasse.

It encouraged the media to continue its diligent efforts to report and broadcast election-related activities to the Ghanaian public to ensure transparency of the electoral process.

The statement comes in the wake of delayed collation exercise for three Eastern Region constituencies at the Tesano Police Training School in Greater Accra Region.

“Our understanding is that the Electoral Commission (EC) moved the collation of results from Akwatia, Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Fanteakwa constituencies to the regional level and now to the national level due to the widely reported incidents of disruption, destruction and arson at other collation centres around the country,” the Council noted.

“Our checks with partners have also confirmed that the collation exercise at Tesano Police Training School was at the instance of the EC and not any political party or the Ghana Police Service,” it added.

“The NPC continues to speak with all relevant stakeholders to resolve this matter and ensure a peaceful resolution,”the press release concluded.
