The Member of Parliament-elect for Kwesimintsim Constituency, Lawyer Philip Fiifi Buckman, has commenced his parliamentary duties with a compassionate visit to cholera victims at Kwesimintsim Hospital on Friday, December 13, 2024.
He provided financial assistance of GHC5,000 and donated hospital materials to support the facility’s efforts in combating the outbreak.
This compassionate gesture showcases his dedication to addressing local health concerns and supporting vulnerable populations, demonstrating his commitment to serving his constituency.
This thoughtful gesture comes amid a challenging time for the region, as it grapples with a severe cholera outbreak. As of December 7, 2024, there have been 789 suspected cases and 8 deaths recorded, with daily cases exceeding 60.
The outbreak is predominantly affecting the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan and Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal areas, accounting for 95% of infections.
Investigations have revealed that contaminated vegetables sold by food vendors are the primary source of infection, responsible for 96% of cases. In response, the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) has implemented an immediate ban on the sale of vegetables by food vendors in the region.
Lawyer Philip Fiifi Buckman’s proactive efforts to support his constituents during the cholera outbreak are truly commendable. His recent donation of hospital materials and GHC5,000 to the Kwesimintsim Hospital is a testament to his commitment to the well-being of his community.
“As soon as I learned about the cholera outbreak, especially here at your facility, I immediately reached out to my chairman and executive to assemble a team to visit and assess the situation. As human beings, we cannot afford to be indifferent.”
“Although I have not yet assumed office, I felt compelled to come and gather firsthand information about the outbreak. I also wanted to offer our support, albeit modest, to help alleviate the situation. That’s why I’m here today.” He mentioned
This generous gesture comes at a critical time, as the Kwesimintsim hospital reported a disturbing spike of 19 new cholera cases and 2 deaths within a two-hour window on December 12, 2024.
Dr. Osei Frimpong, Medical Superintendent of the facility, has expressed being overwhelmed by the situation, making Lawyer Buckman’s support all the more vital.
“Daily, we’re seeing an average of 20 new cholera cases. While some patients are discharged within a day or two, others require three to five days of care. Despite our efforts, the number of cases continues to rise.”
“To address the influx of patients and prevent a ‘no bed syndrome,’ we’ve acquired additional mattresses. Ahantaman Rural Bank generously donated 20 mattresses, and other institutions have also provided support.”
“Although the Regional Health Directorate has provided antibiotics and mandated free treatment for cholera cases, we still require significant resources to care for the victims. We kindly appeal to individuals and groups to offer assistance.“
“Your generous donation today will significantly contribute to our efforts in combating this cholera outbreak. We’re delighted to see you initiate this collective effort, demonstrating your readiness to take on the responsibilities of your office. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with you.” He stated.
