The Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) has called on trade unions and the working class to vote for a presidential candidate who respects and defend workers right.
The Union indicated that workers should ensure that the candidate they will vote for can create an environment for businesses to thrive.
In a statement read by the General Secretary of the GMWU, Abdul Moomin Gbana, he said this year’s elections should be peaceful. He spoke at the Union’s National Executive Council Meeting held on November 26.
“To all trade unions, their members, and the working people of this country, our future depends on the peaceful election. Therefore, whilst calling on every Ghanaian worker to participate fully in this year’s elections by going out in your numbers to vote for the candidate of your choice, I urge you to vote for a candidate that understands and empathizes with the needs of the working people, a candidate that respect workers and trade unions rights,” he urged.
Mr Gbana added that they should vote for “a candidate that will create the enabling environment for Businesses to thrive and create jobs for the teeming young people of this country. I urge you all to be agents of peace before, during and after the elections, may the best candidate win.”
The General Secretary of GMWU also asked the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, politicians who are main actors, to ensure that the country does not plunge into chaos.
“We want to call on the Electoral Commission, the umpire and lead actor in our electoral process to be professional and impartial, work within the mandate allowed it by the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and desist from all acts, including public pronouncements that have the tendency to mar the credibility of the elections and its eventual outcome,” he said.
“To the political parties, particularly the two leading parties NDC and NPP, we urged them to be measured in their expectations and engagements with each other, especially the EC to eschew violence, hate speech and disinformation,” Mr Gbana added.
“To the security agencies, you must remember that you are expected to provide security to all Ghanaians and not a select few. You are expected to be an agent of peace and enabler of democracy and not to intimidate, bully and scare innocent citizens away from exercising their franchise,” he urged.
