The Chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketsia has reiterated that it is only NDC which has the willingness to develop the western rail lines.
Addressing a mini rally at Esuoso in the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency as part of his three days campaign tour in the Western Region, he alleged that because the members of NPP administration own the haulage trucks for the manganese and bauxite, they are reluctant to construct the rail lines.
He said the next NDC administration will prioritize the railways industry.
Mr Asiedu Nketsia reaffirmed his party’s commitment to developing the Western Rail Lines. Speaking at the rally in Esuoso in the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency, as part of his three-day campaign tour, Nketsia emphasized that the NDC is the only party willing to invest in this critical infrastructure.
He mentioned that “When former President Kufuor established a railway ministry, unfortunately, they dismantled the railways instead of developing them. The challenge is that some senior NPP members own haulage trucks that transport manganese and bauxite, making it difficult for them to support railway development. They’ve made promises to repair and construct the railways, but I’m skeptical. I believe President Mahama is the only one who can truly develop the Western Rail Lines. Let’s vote for the NDC to revive the railways, reduce haulage truck traffic, and boost business in Tarkwa.” He assured the constituents
The Western Rail Line, which runs from Takoradi Port to Kumasi, is a vital transportation artery that has been in disrepair for years. Only 66 km of the 339 km line is currently operational.
The NDC’s plan to revitalize the railway industry could have a significant impact on the local economy, particularly in the mining sector. The Ghana Manganese Mine at Nsuta and the bauxite mine at Awaso are both located along the Western Line, and efficient rail transportation could greatly reduce their operational costs.
Nketsia’s statement comes on the heels of a $3.2 billion agreement signed by the government with Thelo DB of South Africa and Transtech Consult Limited of Ghana to upgrade the rail infrastructure from Huni Valley to Dunkwa.
However, the NDC Chairman’s comments suggest that his party would prioritize the development of the Western Rail Lines, potentially bringing much-needed investment and jobs to the region.
It’s worth noting that the Western Rail Line has a rich history, dating back to 1898 when it was first constructed. With the NDC’s commitment to its development, the region may soon see a resurgence in economic activity and growth.
