Days after being announced as the new head coach of Manchester United and the successor to Erik Ten Hag, Ruben Amorim delivered the perfect audition to justify his appointment by United’s football hierarchy with a convincing 4-1 win for Sporting CP over Manchester City.
The lead-up to the game was much fixated on Amorim, who many felt was being thrown at the deep end by his United appointment, while others thought he was cut for the top.
Four minutes into the game, Manchester City’s Phil Foden made sure the uncertainty around Amorim continued to linger with his early goal for the visitors.
However, Ruben Amorim’s most lethal forward, Victor Gyokeres, grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and scored a hat-trick as Sporting ran away with a 4-1 victory against Manchester City.
The result would delight many United fans who saw their Champions League record for the most games without a defeat snapped by Manchester City in the last round against Slavia Praha but Amorim made light work of the Cityzens on Tuesday night.
Since Guardiola took the reins at City in 2016 and since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Manchester United have been second-best to Manchester City in results and achievements.
However, in Amorim, United look to rewrite their wrongs.
In his pre-match presser, Amorim said United fans would question his appointment if they lost to City but would dub him the new Alex Ferguson if they defeated their city rivals, and so it proved to be.
Can’t wait to see him in the Manchester United corner as their manager
