Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the government of being complicit in illegal mining activities, known as galamsey.
He believes government’s complicity is the reason no state of emergency has been declared to tackle the issue.
In an interview on Ghana Tonight on TV3 with Alfred Ocansey on October 15, he argued that the equipment used for mining operations is provided by wealthy individuals, not the workers on the ground.
He indicated that those with “deep” pockets are behind the destruction of the country’s natural resources.
“The government’s involvement in these activities is why we have not seen a state of emergency declared yet. The boys working on these sites don’t own the equipment—they are brought by those with big pockets,” Dr. Tamakloe said.
He has therefore called for the declaration of a state of emergency specifically targeting surface mining activities in water bodies, forest reserves, and other critical areas.
According to Dr. Tamakloe, this is the only way to effectively address the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining.
“We need a complete state of emergency for surface mining in rivers, forest reserves, and all affected areas. Once we stabilize that, we can determine the next steps,” he stressed.
Dr. Tamakloe emphasized that only through decisive, military-led action, free from political influence, can the country hope to curb the galamsey menace.
He also urged the government to look beyond short-term fixes and focus on tackling the root causes of the problem, including the powerful individuals behind illegal mining operations.
