Former Accra Lions left-back David Oduro has described his move to Barcelona as historic after spending two seasons in Ghana.
The young defender, who played for Accra Lions from 2022 to 2024, signed a three-year contract with Barcelona B after impressing during trials.
Oduro couldn’t contain his excitement when discussing the move to the storied club.
“First of all, I’m very, very happy because getting this opportunity is not very easy, especially from Ghana here. So, for me, I’m very happy,” he told Sporty TV.
“It’s historic for Ghana, being the first player to move straightly from here to Barcelona is great news for Ghana,” he added.
Oduro was one of three players unveiled by Barça Atlétic on Tuesday, alongside Cameroon’s Ivan Cedric and countryman Abdul Aziz Issah.
Oduro, who is known for his technical skills and ability to drive forward, has drawn comparisons to Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies.
However, he cites Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde as a major inspiration and looks forward to playing alongside him.
“It will be a great feeling because I have always watched him play and I admire him a lot, so it will be a great feeling for me,” he said.
Oduro’s move is the first direct transfer between a Ghanaian club and the Spanish giants and is expected to pave the way for more future transfers.
As a trailblazer in this regard, Oduro hopes his success will encourage Barcelona to seek out more top Ghanaian talents.
“And for me, I will also go there and prove to them so that the doors will open for them to also get the chance to go there,” he said.
With Barcelona operating under financial constraints, Oduro will be keen to make a significant impact and further his career.
