The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says the Trust has captured over 100,000 self-employed persons under its Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED) scheme.
Mr Philip Kofi Senyah, the SSNIT Manager in-charge of Operations, explained that the Trust launched the implementation of the SEED scheme in 2023 to encourage self-employed persons to voluntarily join and contribute to the scheme to guarantee their future financial security.
However, he told the media in an interview on the sidelines of SSNIT’s maiden edition of the ‘Media Connect’ forum in Kumasi, that about 80 per cent of self-employed persons remained uncaptured.
SSNIT organised the forum to deepen collaboration and empower the media to promote accurate, balanced and impactful stories on social security issues and it was attended by media professionals and managers drawn from the Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono and Bono East Regions.
It was part of the lined-up activities for the 60th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of SSNIT on the theme: “A legacy of service.”
Mr Senyah regretted that about 80 per cent of the nation’s workforce, particularly those in the informal sector, remained unregistered and non-contributors to the Trust, and advised those who had not joined the SEED scheme to do so for their own benefit.
Earlier in a presentation, Mr Senyah urged the media to support the SSNIT and help intensify awareness creations on the SEED scheme and to clarify public misconceptions about the SSNIT by churning out impactful stories.
He also entreated the media to set the agenda for public discourse, pension policy reforms and retirement security as well as champion digital inclusion by educating the public on SSNIT services and innovations.
Mr Senyah explained that the ‘Media Connect’ was also to enlighten the media more on the SSNIT’s ongoing transformation initiatives, create a common platform for open dialogue, feedback and partnership to enhance public understanding and enrolment in the SSNIT Scheme.
It also reinforced the media’s role as critical partners in driving awareness and trust in the Scheme, particularly among informal and self-employed workers.
The participants shared insights, encouraged open conversations, and charted a collective path towards a stronger and more inclusive social security scheme for all employees.
