Stephen Richard Obeng, the Head Coach of the Black Challenge, Ghana’s national amputee football team, has revealed that the donations received after their victory in the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations (AAFCON) have already been spent.
After securing their second AAFCON title by beating Morocco in the final in Egypt the team received support from some individuals and entities including ex-Pesident John Dramani Mahama to alleviate their burden.
The funds were used to cover various expenses incurred by the team upon their return to Ghana.
However, Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Yusif, during the team’s presentation of the trophy to his office demanded an account of all funds recieved.
The Minister expressed his displeasure that the team had sought donations from individuals before engaging with the Ministry. He subsequently demanded a proper accounting of all donations received.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Obeng explained, “We have already shared the money we received from the donations. After we returned, we were together as a team in Accra without any support. We used the money for our upkeep, hotel bills, and transportation to our homes. After they gave us tickets, we never received any logistics. We depended on donors for our upkeep. We will do the accounts for them by stating what we used the money for because the money has already been shared for our upkeep.”
