Ghana’s contingent delivered a commendable performance at the 2023 African Games with both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams clinching victories in their respective heats to advance to the finals.
In the Men’s 4x100m relay, Ghana exhibited their prowess on the track, clocking an impressive time of 38.67 seconds to secure victory in Heat 3. Led by anchor leg runner Joseph Paul Amoah, the team, comprised of Edwin Gadayi, Solomon Hammond, and Benjamin Azamati, showcased flawless teamwork to secure their place in the finals.

The women’s team replicated this success in Heat 2 of the Women’s 4x100m relay, crossing the finish line in 44.24 seconds to claim victory. Their stellar performance, led by Hor Halutie, Benedicta Kwartemaa, Mary Boakye, and Janet Mensah, outpaced their competitors, including Team South Africa, who finished with a time of 44.84 seconds.
While Ghana’s times were among the best in the heats, Liberia and Nigeria posted slightly faster times of 43.73 seconds and 43.91 seconds, respectively, setting the stage for an electrifying showdown in the Women’s 4x100m race.

The victories in both categories come as a welcome relief for Ghana, which has faced challenges in track events, including Benjamin Azamati’s fifth-place finish in the 100m final.
The sole medal achieved thus far in Athletics by Ghana came in the form of a gold, courtesy of Rose Yeboah’s impressive 1.90m jump in the Women’s high jump event.
