The abysmal performance of the NPP in the 2024 General Elections should have made its leaders voluntarily get out of office. But unfortunately, this is not the culture of homo sapiens living on this side of the globe.
But then at least, the party should have organised itself and gone down on its knees, accepting its wrong doings and ask for pardon from the angered party members, especially those two million people who did not go to vote. But again, pride, arrogance and ego-ism did not allow this to even enter the minds of the leaders.
Then came a re-run of nineteen polling stations in Ablekuma North, an NPP stronghold. And the party did not go house to house to beg aggrieved party supporters to forgive its trespasses and come out to vote.
First, the NEC came out and said the party was going to boycott the re-run but the parliamentary candidate said otherwise and the party went for the re-run. The question is, who takes decisions on behalf of the party? And where are the elders?
Unfortunately, today, the NPP has two classes of elders. There is the class of independent-minded elders, who always speak the truth, directly to issues as should be the case. But in this era of NPP, such blessed persons are no longer needed and so their images are tarnished, they get side-lined and made to look like enemies of the party. Unfortunately, H.E. J.A. Kufuor and Hon Kwadwo Mpiani are put in this category. Today, the Establishment is convincing the minds of masses in the party that JAK is just watching on without making any contributions, which they know is a lie.
Then there is this class of elders who choose to run alongside the Establishment and say things that pleased it, just to harvest some goodies.
So, the re-run came on and again, NPP supporters did not vote in their numbers. If this should happen in the up-coming Akwatia bye-elections then one can conclude that many NPP supporters are staying away from the polls, only waiting for another party with UP Tradition base to be formed so that they can join.
The Ablekuma North re-run, exposed something which made it crystal clear, that people who sacrificed for the party are not willing to do so again.
The beating-up of NPP national organiser Nana Boakye and former minister of state, Hawa Koomson among others, without counter-attack from the well-trained NPP counter-terrorist squad, should send the message.
All over social media, there are video clips of some gentlemen who were members of the dreaded NPP Invisible Forces and Delta Forces, who are advising people to stop calling on them for help. What they all said was that they sacrificed their lives for the NPP when it was in opposition and helped bring it to power. But instead of fulfilling promises made to them, the then ruling government completely ignored them and even had some of them jailed. Family and friends of those in power were given juicy appointments. These guys only needed promises made to them fulfilled, but only found themselves dumped like trash.
Things are more serious than they look. These gentlemen are powerful orators and when they speak, they can convinced people in their social class which form the majority. And they are now saying that they are going to evangelise people and spread the word about how ungrateful NPP is. And they warned of worse things to come during the Akwatia bye-elections.
This upcoming bye-election is going to be problematic. Akwatia is a swing constituency and with NPP supporters not willing to go out to vote will be an issue. Now the late MP’s family members are blaming the NPP for dragging Hon. Kumi to court over his victory at the polls, and now he is dead. It looks like Hon. Kumi was not a favoured candidate of the Establishment but managed to win the primaries and went on to win the seat, even as all was done to make him lose.
In this event, NPP is going into Akwatia bye-elections, faced with challenges. There are party supporters; disciples and friends of ex-members of the party’s forces and family members of the late MP who look like they have dumped the party.
To use and dump people is a serious abuse to personality. While NDC is blessed with that divine gift of unity of purpose, NPP believes in not yoking with unbelievers. So, once one holds diverse opinion they are no longer accepted in the party. How strange! For the party was built on togetherness and acceptance of diverse opinions. But then someone stepped in and that ‘nonsense,’ ceased and with it, the base of the pyramid shifted. This has resulted in a major seismic shake-up in the NPP yet those at the top still believe things are not falling apart thinking they are holding the center.
Pride, arrogance and ego-ism are breaking the party apart. Those who matter, those who are important to the party, which include the set-aside elders, the members of the party’s security forces and numerous supporters, who are disregarded are now showing how powerful they are with a loud sound of silence.
This is not UP. When will the spirit of the UP Tradition come back? Will it be in a renewed NPP or another UP based party?
