The Circuit Court in Accra, presided over by Her Honour Susana Eduful, on Friday heard a case involving three Nigerien nationals accused of illegally selling unregistered opioid drugs, commonly known on the streets as “RED,” at the Onion Market at Agbogbloshie in Accra.
The accused – Abdulai Issaka (26), Ali Jibril (20) and Mohammed Yusif (26) – were arraigned before the court yesterday for various offences under the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) and Executive Instrument (E.I.) 167 of 2018.
According to the facts presented by Chief Inspector Abel Amanie, the accused were arrested on June 2, 2025 during an intelligence-led operation conducted by officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the CID Headquarters in Accra.
Each suspect was found in possession of significant quantities of opioids, believed to be unregistered pharmaceutical products:
Abdulai Issaka (A1) was arrested with 16 sachets of Tramaking 225mg tablets, 17 sachets of Tramaking 120mg capsules and 20 sachets of Timaking 250mg tablets.
Ali Jibril (A2) was found with 30 sachets of Tapentadol 250mg tablets, 25 sachets of Taramaking 120mg capsules and 20 sachets of Timaking 120mg capsules.
Mohammed Yusif (A3) had 8 sachets of Timaking 250mg tablets, 5 sachets of Taramaking 225mg tablets and 4 sachets of Timaking 120mg capsules.
All three suspects reportedly confessed to the offence during police interrogation, but refused to disclose the source of their supply.
The drugs in question are suspected to be highly addictive opioid medications being sold illegally and without registration or approval by health authorities.
The court granted bail to Abdulai Issaka (A1) in the sum of GH¢60,000 with three sureties, all of whom must be direct family members earning not less than GH¢5,000 per month. He is to remain under bail until the next court sitting.
Meanwhile, Ali Jibril (A2) and Mohammed Yusif (A3) have been remanded into police custody pending further investigations.
The case has been adjourned to June 24, 2025, when the pleas of the accused persons will be formally taken.
