Kwabena Adu-Boahene
The embattled former Director-General of the erstwhile National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has filed an application demanding the disclosure of all National Security Coordinators’ operational accounts.
The application, filed through his lawyers before a High Court in Accra, is asking for the details of the operational accounts spanning 33 years and five Presidents – from 1992 to date.
The demand forms part of what his lawyers describe as being in the interest of fair trial, and is part of efforts to exonerate him of the allegations made against him by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Mr. Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng have been charged for allegedly stealing a total of GH¢49.1 million from the state.
The two, as well as Mildred Donkor and Advantage Solutions Limited, are facing a total of 11 counts of conspiracy to commit crime, stealing, using public office for profit, money laundering and causing financial loss to the state.
They have all denied any wrongdoing in the ongoing trial, which has attracted both national and international attention.
The Office of the Attorney General has filed witness statements of the three witnesses it intends to call in order to secure a conviction against the accused persons.
But even before the prosecution calls its first witness, Mr. Adu-Boahene has made a bold move at solidifying his defence by requesting the Attorney General to furnish him with all the operational accounts of the National Security Coordinators.
The application, filed by his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, states that “Take Notice that Counsel for the accused persons herein requires you in aid of fair trial and full disclosure to produce for his inspection and making of copies thereof the various National Security Coordinators’ operational accounts.”
The accounts he is seeking access to include President Jerry John Rawlings’s Government (1992 to 2001), President John Agyekum Kufuor’s Government (2001 to 2009), President John Evans Atta Mills’s Government (2009 to 2012), President John Mahama’s Government (2012 to 2013), President Mahama’s Government (2013 to 2017), President Akufo-Addo’s Government (2017 to 2025), and President Mahama’s current tenure.
National Security Secrets
Last month, Samuel Atta Akyea, who is counsel for Mr. Adu-Boahene and the other accused, indicated that his client will have no choice but to divulge National Security secrets if he is pushed to the wall.
According to him, it does not make sense for his client who had faithfully played his role in keeping the sanity of the country, now being pursued by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Office of the Attorney General.
He was responding to questions regarding a memo addressed to the National Security Coordinator which got leaked last week and detailed some expenditures, including monies paid to Members of Parliament as sitting allowance.
The leaked memo also details how a whopping GH¢8.3 million was spent in September 2024 to finance an opposition party in the run up to the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Again, it details how GH¢5.135 million was spent in December 2024 to purchase luxury vehicles that were handed to the Special Aide to the President-elect.
Asked whether his client will have to let out more National Security secrets to defend himself, Mr. Atta Akyea said “he has no choice because why should a man be found guilty when he is innocent, when he is dealing with national security matters?”
