Black Starlets head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum has detailed Ghana's tactical approach for their WAFU Zone B U17 Championship opener against Togo, emphasising defensive discipline and strategic possession play in their final preparations in Yamoussoukro.
Speaking to GFA Communications, Ogum outlined the core principles his team has been refining: "We went back to some of the tactical things we've been doing in terms of how we stay compact if we don't have the ball. How we try to track the opponent's running into space."
The coach revealed a dual-phase game plan focusing on organized defending without possession and expansive, intelligent play when in control of the ball. "When we have the ball how we stay expansive and then try to make sure that we keep the ball and then tease them in and try to use the spaces behind them," Ogum explained.
This strategic approach suggests Ghana will employ a patient, possession-based game designed to draw opponents out of position before exploiting spaces with quick transitionsâa tactic that requires high levels of discipline and game intelligence from the young players.
Ogum expressed confidence in his team's preparation, noting they have adapted well to the conditions in Ivory Coast: "They became used to the environment. They became used to the pitch. So when we came it was easy for them to settle in."
With final preparations including video sessions to reinforce tactical concepts, Ogum's detailed game plan reflects a carefully structured approach to tournament football that balances defensive solidity with creative attacking intent as Ghana begins their campaign on Saturday.
