Black Starlets head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum is leveraging a modern, two-tiered preparation strategy ahead of Ghana’s WAFU Zone B U17 Championship opener, blending on-field training with video analysis to ensure his team is tactically and mentally ready for the challenge.
After a focused on-field session in Yamoussoukro where players worked on defensive compactness, tracking opponents’ runs, and expansive possession play, Ogum revealed the next phase of preparation: “Today, we’ll have a video session. Take them through some of the things that they need to know.”
This integrated approach allows the young players to physically experience tactical concepts during training before reinforcing them visually in the classroom.
Ogum emphasised that this final phase is about consolidation rather than introduction of new ideas: “Basically, it’s going to be a revision of the things they’ve gone through. This is not the time to introduce new variables.”
This dual-pronged preparation is particularly valuable for youth tournaments where mental processing and quick decision-making are as important as physical readiness.
The video sessions help players recognise patterns of play they’ve practiced on the field, potentially improving their in-game reactions and spatial awareness.
Ogum’s approach demonstrates how Ghana is embracing contemporary coaching methods at youth level, ensuring players receive comprehensive preparation that addresses both the physical and cognitive aspects of tournament football as they begin their campaign against Togo on Saturday.
