Asante Kotoko will be hoping for a strong start in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League as they travel to face Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park on Saturday.
The Porcupine Warriors are determined to challenge for the league title for the first time since 2022, while also competing on multiple fronts this season, including the CAF Confederation Cup and defending their MTN FA Cup crown.
Kotoko have strengthened their squad with new signings including Guinean forward Morifing Donzo, winger Hubert Gyau, midfielder Francis Acquah, and defender Lord Hilary Adabo, while retaining key performers from last season. They are unbeaten in their last three league openers and will look to carry that momentum into this fixture.
Coach Karim Zito acknowledges the challenges of managing a squad with several new players. “When you are with a lot of new players, it takes time to gel because adaptation is not easy, and the level of intelligence is not the same. Even the Europeans will tell you that some can take up to a whole season before the team will gel the way you want it,” Zito said.
“But there is nothing you can do. We have to fight and fight hard and then adjust our thinking, adjust our attitude towards the league and then the Confederation Cup,” he added.
Berekum Chelsea, meanwhile, are eager to improve on last season’s 12th-place finish. Despite their struggles, they have proven difficult to beat at home, remaining unbeaten in their last five matches against Kotoko at Golden City Park. The Blues will rely on that record and home support to challenge the Porcupines.
With Kotoko aiming to balance league, cup, and continental ambitions and Chelsea defending a proud home record, Saturday’s clash promises a competitive and closely fought encounter.
