Belgian side Royal Francs Borains have announced the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Essiam on a season-long loan from Swiss giants FC Basel.
The 21-year-old joins the club in search of regular playing time after limited opportunities in Switzerland’s topflight.
Essiam, who was born in Ghana, first caught international attention during the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a key role in helping the Black Satellites clinch the continental title.
His outstanding performances earned him a move to FC Basel in early 2022, marking the beginning of his European adventure.
Since arriving in Switzerland, the versatile midfielder has gained valuable experience through loan spells, first at Stade Lausanne-Ouchy and most recently at FC Aarau in the Swiss second division.
At Aarau, Essiam featured 14 times last season, showing flashes of his energy and physicality in midfield battles. In total, he has already amassed 41 professional appearances across his Basel career and loan stints.
Borain sporting director Laurent D’Affnay expressed delight at the signing, describing Essiam as a powerful midfielder with great work rate:
“Emmanuel is a player we’ve been monitoring for a long time. He brings intensity and will help us achieve our goals this season.”
Essiam himself is eager to embrace the challenge in Belgium:
“I liked the club’s project. After speaking with the director and coach, I felt this was the right place to continue my development. I want to reach my full potential here and contribute to the team’s success.”
The move represents an important step in Essiam’s young career as he seeks consistent minutes to further his development and live up to the potential he showed on the continental stage with Ghana’s U20 side.
