AFC Bournemouth captain Adam Smith spoke strongly against the racial abuse on Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo on Friday night after the team’s defeat to Liverpool in the opening match of the 2025/26 English Premier League season.
Both Smith and Semenyo started the season’s opening match played at Anfield today.
Thirty minutes into the first half, the match was halted by the referee after the Blak Stars striker reported an incident of racial abuse.
The abuse reportedly from a Liverpool fan occurred when Semenyo was effecting a throw-in.
Speaking on the incident after the match, Adam Smith condemned what happened, stressing that it is unacceptable.
“It’s totally unacceptable that this happened. I’m shocked, to be honest. In this day and age, it shouldn’t be happening,” the AFC Bournemouth captain told Sky Sports.
Despite being racially abused, Antoine Semenyo stayed grounded throughout the match and responded with two goals in the second half.
Unfortunately, the goals were not enough to save his side from a 4-2 defeat to Liverpool at the end of the contest.
