President of the Ghana Football Association Kurt Okraku has eulogized Telecommunication giants, MTN for their unwavering support to the Black Stars despite the team’s poor showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The West African giants struggled at the AFCON tournament, held at neighboring country, Ivory Coast, where the Elephants emerged as the eventual winners.
Ghana failed to win a win a match in the group stages, managing just two points from their three matches at the continental showpiece.
Despite the team’s unimpressive performance, the Ghana FA and the Telecommunication giants have sealed a landmark sponsorship for the next two years.
Under the two-year agreement, MTN will serve as the headline sponsor for the Black Stars, Black Queens, Black Satellites, and Black Starlets.
The new sponsorship deal is also worth $2 million and will run until August 2027. This will also serve as a support for the teams’ development and preparations.
And according to Kurt Okraku, the Black Stars failure at the AFCON inspired MTN to support the charge in bringing back the love for the national team.
“Also want to thank you, Steve, for your belief in my leadership, for your belief in the vehicle of football and what it can do for the youth of our country, and for your commitment to football. You were with us at the AFCON campaign in Abidjan, and that did not quench your fire. The failure rather encouraged you to support the charge to bring back the love for our Black Stars. Thank you”
“This is what true leadership meansâyou don’t want leaders to support you only when you are flying high; you want leaders to be with you even when the chips are heavily against you. That has been the story of MTN Ghana” he said.
The Black Stars will return to action in September for the continuation of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
