Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has weighed in on the comparisons between Mohammed Kudus and Noni Madueke following their respective transfers to North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
Speaking on his podcast alongside Joel Beya, Ferdinand questioned the notion that Kudus is significantly ahead of Madueke in terms of quality or potential.
“Is Kudus massively better than Madueke?” Ferdinand asked, before offering a measured take. “I don’t think potential-wise there’s a massive difference. The age is a big thing. The amount of games Madueke has played compared to Kudus is quite different, and he hasn’t had the same exposure in the Premier League, especially.”
Madueke, 23, joins Arsenal as part of a busy transfer window for the club, while Kudus, 25, becomes a key figure under new Spurs boss Thomas Frank. Despite some scepticism from fans about Madueke’s signing, Ferdinand defended the young winger, insisting he has the tools to succeed.
“I think Madueke has got a high ceiling. I think he can go places. He’s a really good addition,” he added.
Both players arrive with similar transfer fees and will now be under pressure to deliver in a high-stakes rivalry. While Kudus is expected to play a central role at Tottenham, Madueke may initially need to fight for a starting place in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Ferdinand’s comments offer a reminder that, despite the early comparisons, both players are still developing â and their performances in the coming season could go a long way in defining their status in English football.
