Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has urged the current leadership of the association to draw lessons from the downfall of ex-GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi as it considers amending its statutes.
His warning follows a proposal to extend the GFA presidential term limit from two to three terms, which will be discussed at the upcoming 31st Ordinary Congress on Tuesday, August 12, at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Dr. Tamakloe cautioned that history has a tendency to repeat itself, especially when past mistakes go unheeded.
“I warn that history has repeated itself in several instances in this country, and we don't seem to take note of that,” Tamakloe told Joy Sports.
Using Nyantakyi’s case as a cautionary tale, he pointed to the former GFA president’s ambition to extend his tenure as one of the key factors that led to his eventual downfall.
“If we are not careful, this can create a big problem, because citing the downfall of the former GFA boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi, my very good friend, I attribute it to this particular thing he himself wanted to do would have an impact on his downfall.
"Now, to me, anyone who wants to stay in power perpetually, especially by twisting the constitution to suit their interests, is a danger to the organisation and the society," he added.
Kwesi Nyantakyi had completed two terms before the GFA revised its rules to allow a third. However, his tenure was cut short in 2018 following the release of the explosive Number 12 investigative documentary by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which led to Nyantakyi’s resignation and a subsequent ban by FIFA.
