Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has appeared in court charged with raping two women at his £6million Hertfordshire mansion and sexually assaulting a third woman, as part of a series of alleged offences said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022.
The 32-year-old Ghana international is accused of three counts of rape against one complainant at his Hertfordshire home and two further counts of rape against a second alleged victim, one of which reportedly occurred at a luxury hotel in Spain. A third woman claims Partey sexually assaulted her by lying on top of her, attempting to kiss her, and groping her without consent.
Partey, who left Arsenal at the end of June following the expiry of his contract, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday for a brief hearing in which he spoke only to confirm his personal details. He was granted conditional bail and will next appear at the Old Bailey on 2 September.
Under his bail terms, Partey must not contact any of the three complainants and must notify police of any change of address, any location where he intends to stay for more than 14 days, and any international travel plans. Prosecutors said the conditions were workable despite the player likely to relocate to Spain amid interest from Villarreal, where he is expected to sign a two-year deal.
Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 and won the Europa League during his time in Spain, denies all the charges. His lawyer Jenny Wiltshire, said: “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”
The Crown Prosecution Service said it brought the charges after “carefully reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence” following a police probe that began in February 2022.
Partey has represented Ghana at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and the 2022 World Cup.
