Sudan enter the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with quiet belief under the guidance of Kwesi Appiah, the experienced Ghanaian coach tasked with guiding the Northeast African country back to prominence in continental football. The Falcons of Jediane will be making their third appearance in the tournament, which features players drawn exclusively from domestic leagues.
Their route to qualification saw them overcome Tanzania on penalties after a 1-1 draw over two legs, followed by a 2-1 aggregate win against Ethiopia. The campaign marked a positive step under Appiah, who was appointed in September 2023 after the exit of Moroccan coach Badou Zaki.
Appiah, 64, is well known in African football circles, having led Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. Since taking over, he has already steered Sudan to the 2024 AFCON. Now, his focus turns to CHAN, a competition he is participating in for the first time.
Leading Sudan’s squad is striker Mohamed Abdel Rahman, popularly known as âAl-Ghorbal.’ The Al-Hilal forward, the country’s third-highest scorer, brings a wealth of experience and goal-scoring pedigree from the domestic and continental stage.
Sudan’s best CHAN result came in 2011 when they finished third as hosts. Ranked 113th in the world, they hope to mount a serious challenge this year as the tournament unfolds across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. They will face Congo, Nigeria, and defending champions Senegal in the group stage.
For Appiah, this tournament offers another chance to shape his legacy within African football.
