The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has held a leadership training workshop for its directors and deputy directors to build their emotional intelligence to improve workplace productivity and foster a healthy organisational culture.
The workshop, on the theme: “Inspirational leadership through emotional intelligence,” forms part of the Ministry’s broader initiative to strengthen leadership capacity among its senior management.
Mr Jonathan Prince Cann, Managing Partner, JPCANN Associates Limited, a business advisory firm in leadership training, which facilitated the workshop, drew a distinction between leadership and management, while highlighting the importance of self-awareness, purposeful communication, emotional regulation, and visionary leadership.
He said true leadership went beyond administrative efficiency, urging participants to develop greater self-awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation, qualities that built trust, inspired teams, and sustained performance under pressure.
Mr Cann guided the participants through reflective exercises designed to help them recognise their emotional triggers, understand the dynamics of team behaviour, and communicate with intentionality and clarity.
They were also taken through practical strategies to enhance their interpersonal skills to lead with empathy and clarity in their respective roles.
Mr Vitus O. Langmagne, the Director of Human Resource at the Tourism Ministry, commended the level of engagement at the workshop, describing it as “insightful and impactful.”
He expressed appreciation to Mr Cann for his dynamic delivery, emphasising the need to institutionalise such workshops to sustain staff well-being and improve overall performance.
“The Ministry remains committed to continuous staff development and considers this workshop a strategic move towards nurturing a resilient and emotionally intelligent leadership team,” Mr Langmagne said.
He noted that the training would be held often to support organisational growth and development.
