Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has taken its environmental commitment to the streets, with staff members conducting a major clean-up operation on Meridian-Harbor Road as part of the company’s ECO MOTION initiative.
The exercise, carried out in collaboration with Tema Metropolitan Assembly and Zesta Environmental Solutions, saw corporate employees working directly on environmental restoration in the Tema area.
Eric Pwadura, Director of Corporate Affairs, led the initiative which demonstrates how major corporations are increasingly taking hands-on approaches to environmental challenges. The ECO MOTION campaign represents GNPC’s broader strategy of environmental stewardship and sustainable community development.
Eunice Ofori, Head of Events at GNPC’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, explained the driving force behind the initiative. “This is essential work for the sake of future generations. A polluted environment directly impacts agricultural productivity contamination prevents crops from thriving and producing good yields,” Eunice Ofori said.
Eunice Ofori connected the clean-up to broader environmental concerns, noting: “We need to leave a clean environment as legacy because there is a saying that when the last tree dies the last man dies. We want to see green vegetation, we want to clean and plant trees.”
The GNPC official also challenged local communities to match the corporate effort. “I am calling on the people of Tema and its environs to also take up the mantle and do their best to keep their surroundings clean,” Eunice Ofori stated.
The street clean-up marks a shift from traditional corporate social responsibility programmes to direct environmental action. Instead of simply funding environmental projects, GNPC staff rolled up their sleeves to tackle pollution firsthand.
The collaboration between GNPC, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and Zesta Environmental Solutions shows how public-private partnerships can address local environmental issues effectively. The initiative runs under the campaign hashtag #GreenTodayGreenerTomorrow.
The Meridian-Harbor Road operation signals GNPC’s intention to make environmental action a regular part of its corporate activities, with plans for ongoing clean-up and tree planting efforts across different locations in the country.
