It has been announced at a press briefing in Accra that Ghana is set to host the African Association of Accountant-Generals (AAAG) 2025 annual conference in November this year. The conference aims to build capacities of public finance professionals and share best practices across the length and breadth of Africa.
AAAG will host its 3rd Annual Conference in Accra, from November 24-28. Themed ‘Africa of Tomorrow: Positioning Public Finance Management for Economic Prosperity’, the conference aims to revolutionise how governments manage taxpayers money and advocate modernied financial systems to unlock Africa’s vast economic potential.
The event will gather over 2,000 public finance experts, senior government officials, development partners, innovators, thought leaders and venture capitalists from across the continent to discuss how they can accelerate Africa’s development through robust public financial management systems, aiming to drive public financial management reforms across Africa.
Speakjng at the event, the Controller and Accountant-General, Mr. Kwasi Agyei, noted that: “Public financial management is the bedrock upon which we can build sustainable economic growth, ensure accountability and promote transparency in the management of our nations’ resources”.
Mr. Agyei said the conference is expected to provide a platform for dialogue, collaboration and innovation among financial leaders in seeking ways of enhancing public financial management, not only in Ghana but across Africa.
Organised in collaboration with Ghana’s Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD), the conference aims to be a catalyst for sweeping public financial management reforms in Africa.
AAAG Chief Executive Officer Fredrick Riaga noted that: “Africa’s development ambitions hinge on transforming how we manage public funds”.
He therefore urged the adoption of agile, digital, citizen-centred and climate-responsive systems, critical to building resilience and public trust while achieving inclusive growth.
In the face of glaring traditional Public Finance Management systems’ inefficiencies across Africa, which are still prone to payroll fraud as witnessed in Ghana’s recent Auditor-Generals’ report, AAAG argues that harnessing innovation – including Artificial Intelligence, digitalisation and climate-responsive budgeting – within robust fiscal governance frameworks is essential for future prosperity.
“This conference is more than a gathering; it’s a movement,” AAAG Chairperson Mrs. Malehlohonolo Mahase emphasised. “We are driving Africa toward transparency, enhanced accountability, improved service delivery and efficient resource-use. Rethinking public resource management is how we build a prosperous, inclusive Africa ready for any challenge.”
Ghana has positioned itself as a leader in PFM reforms and digital transformation. “We welcome Africa’s finance leaders to Accra,” said Mr. Agyei. “Ghana is on this reform journey and we eagerly anticipate sharing our experiences while learning from others. This conference is a major opportunity to collectively shape Africa’s financial future.”
He stressed that the conference’s purpose transcends merely discussing challenges and aims to forge pathways for economic prosperity that benefits all citizens of our nations.
“Together, we can build an Africa that is prepared for tomorrow; where sound financial management leads to sustainable development and improved livelihoods.”
The conference will feature high-level plenaries and in-depth technical sessions on cutting-edge PFM solutions. It will also provide a platform for networking among public finance experts, senior government officials, development partners, innovators and investors from across Africa and globally.
An exhibition of sophisticated innovations in FinTech, AI and digital government services will also be showcased at the event.
Building on successful conferences in Tanzania and Lesotho, the Accra event is poised to be the most significant yet – focusing more on translating PFM reform into tangible economic growth and sustainable development for the continent.
The African Association of Accountants General (AAAG) is a Pan-African organisation driving transformation, transparency and accountability in public resource management. It fosters excellence in PFM through collaboration, knowledge-sharing and capacity building.
