The Ghana Tourism Authority’s (GTA) 2024 Tourism Report affirms the growing popularity of Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park as one of the country’s most cherished tourist destinations.
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park topped the list of most visited tourist attractions for 2024 with 333,233 visitors, representing 20% of all recorded visits to tourist sites nationwide. More importantly, the surge is part of a broader national trend.
The country also recorded 1.68 million domestic tourist visits in 2024, a 19% increase from the previous year.
In spite of global economic challenges, tourism continues to exhibit stability and growth. It is in this regard that management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has set an ambitious target of attracting one million visitors annualy by the year 2026.
The park’s Executive Director, Dr. Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, revealed that management wants to push the boundary beyond 2024’s figure. He believes this goal is not only bold but achievable.
In that regard, efforts are ongoing to enhance the site’s appeal through continued investment, infrastructure upgrades and innovative programming. Seating areas around the park have been increased for relaxation and events.
Additionally, the park’s website is being restored to enable virtual tours among others. Plans are also underway to introduce Kwame Nkrumah History Clubs in primary and secondary schools, as well as to reactivate the on-site restaurant.
Inspired by Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the park is already a magnet for visitors keen to explore the country’s political journey and pivotal role that Osagyefo played.
Tourism is a major employer – particularly in the formal sector – and stimulates various other sectors of the economy. It is a significant source of foreign exchange for Ghana, boosting the country’s balance of payments.
Tourism is currently the fourth-largest source of foreign exchange earnings, estimated at US$2.7billion. For several years, Ghana has generated huge sums of revenue from the tourism sector; most especially during the 2019 Year of Return.
The industry’s potential has inspired government initiatives to further develop and promote tourism.
