?The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union, GMWU of TUC, has commended Heath Goldfields Ltd. – current leaseholder and operator of Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine – for paying a significant portion amounting to about GH¢80million of the total debt owed to workers of the Bogoso and Prestea Mines.
?This step fulfils one of the key conditions for granting leases and has undoubtedly brought some relief to GMWU members and their families; hence, the management of Heath Goldfields Ltd. deserves commendation.
?In November 2024, government issued the Bogoso-Prestea mining leases to Heath Goldfields Ltd. as part of conditions for granting the leases. However, Heath Goldfields Ltd. – the current leaseholder – was expected to settle all outstanding debts owed workers by the previous leaseholder.
?Consequently, the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union welcomes this bold move by Heath Goldfields Ltd. to settle the legacy debt, despite several months of legal tussle orchestrated to frustrate the current leaseholder’s investment plans for the Bogoso-Prestea mines.
?Furthermore, the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union would also like to commend Heath Goldfield Ltd. for assembling a team of smart, motivated, young Ghanaian mining professionals who are determined to turn-around the Bogoso-Prestea asset for the greater good of all stakeholders.
?Accordingly, the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union pledges its fullest support and commitment to working cooperatively and collaboratively with the new management team of Heath Goldfields Ltd. to settle the remaining debt and ultimately transform the Bogoso-Prestea Mine into a world-class asset.
?The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union uses this opportunity to call on government through the sector Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, regulatory agencies – especially, the Minerals Commission and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – the chiefs and people of Bogoso and Prestea communities and all well-meaning Ghanaians to support the turn-around efforts of Bogoso-Presta mines under the management of Heath Goldfields Ltd.
