The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced an urgent directive for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to deploy 200 new transformers across major cities to bolster Ghana’s electricity distribution network.
The move comes in response to recent public concerns over intermittent power outages and aims to address infrastructure challenges while keeping pace with rising demand from residential and industrial consumers.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on Wednesday, May 28, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering reliable power nationwide.
“I’m happy to note that despite the challenges we inherited, the recent report I got is that recent power generation has been stable, and we have even begun exporting some power,” Jinapor said.
He emphasized that while generation has stabilized, distribution remains a critical priority: “What we need to do is to continue to improve the transmission network and the distribution network.“
The deployment of the 200 transformers is expected to ease pressure on the existing grid and prevent localized outages.

“I have granted approval to the ECG to, as a matter of urgency, inject about 200 new transformers in our major capital cities in order to ensure that we do not just generate power, but we’re able to transmit and distribute it effectively and efficiently,” he added.
The Minister also highlighted Ghana’s continued electricity exports to neighbouring countries as a sign of strength in generation capacity, while reiterating plans for ongoing investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure.
