Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor has disclosed that Independent Power Producer, Karpowership has withdrawn its letter to cease operations on May 18, 2025.
The Minister at a meeting with stakeholders in the energy sector on Thursday, May 14 revealed that Karpowership, one of the major Independent Power Producers which provides 450MW power to the national grid has served notice to the Ministry to shutdown by May 18 over $400 million debt.
However, in an interview on News360 on TV3, May 14, 2025, John Jinapor assured that a roadmap has been agreed with Karpowership and the company will not cease power supply to the national grid on May 18 as indicated earlier.
“If you take Karpower for instance, we have very good meetings with them and I can tell you the good news is that they have withdrawn the May 18, deadline and that’s very positive news and that’s what we do here, we find solutions.
“We have agreed on a roadmap with Karpower and so that letter has been withdrawn. We inherited that problem, a legacy debt of $400 million,” he noted.
The sector is currently grappling with crisis with huge excess debt of $3.1 billion, an amount of $1.7 billion owed IPPs and GHC2 billion monthly under recoveries by the Electricity Company of Ghana.
The sector is also facing a critical challenge with an urgent need for GH?1.1 billion to procure liquid fuel for power generation.
The situation is dire, as existing fuel reserves were projected to last for a mere 2.6 days.
But the Spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Energy Ministry, Richmond Rockson has allayed fears of imminent power outages due to scarcity of fuel for the country’s power generation.
Richmond Rockson has assured that the Ministry has taken steps to address the limited fuel reserves for the country’s power generation.
Speaking in an interview on TV3 New Day’s Big Issue, Friday, May 16, 2025, he disclosed that 450,000 barrels of light crude oil have been procured to augment the fuel shortage
“As at the time the Minister was speaking, we only had less than 3 days cover for light crude oil. The update now is that we have made provision for import and we will be expecting 450,000 barrels of light crude oil between today (Friday, May 16) and tomorrow (Saturday, May 17).
“And with that people’s fear that they were going to sleep in darkness will be averted,” he stated.
