Principals of the 47 Colleges of Education across the country are calling on government to increase the monthly teacher trainee allowance from 400 to 1,000 Ghana cedis.
President of the Principals’ Professor Atintono, says the current allowance is inadequate—especially when only 8 cedis a day is allocated for feeding each student.
“The current amount doesn’t meet the basic needs of trainees, especially their feeding. We’re urging government to urgently review it,” he stated.
Professor Atintono also proposed that government considers stopping student feeding altogether and instead increase the allowance to allow trainees to manage their own feeding.
“It’s time we rethink the feeding system in the colleges. Allow the students to manage their own meals with a more reasonable allowance.”
Sector Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, assured the principals that their concerns are being considered.
“Government is committed to reviewing the allowance and responding swiftly to your concerns,” he noted.
In a related development, the principals also called on government to fast-track the finalization of their conditions of service.
“We deserve fair conditions that reflect our contribution to teacher training in this country.”
The Education Minister agreed, acknowledging that the principals deserve improved working conditions.
“We’ll work to ensure your conditions of service are addressed promptly.” the Minister said.
The principals further appealed for the provision of official vehicles and increased support for infrastructure development.
In response, the minister promised to liaise with GETFund to complete at least 10 abandoned projects in the colleges.
Government is expected to announce concrete steps in the coming weeks, as pressure mounts from education stakeholders for a comprehensive review of teacher training support.
